Where to see the Olympic Torch in Rotherham

THE Olympic Torch comes to Rotherham on June 26—and here is how to make the most of the historic day.

The flame will be in “convoy mode”—carried by a vehicle and not on public display—when it sets off from Magna.

It will first be visible from the street at Sheffield Road’s junction with Marsh Street at about 8.50am.

Visitors will be able to see it taken in “torchbearer mode” along Westgate before the route turns on to Church Street, between the Imperial Buildings and Hamby’s shop.

The torch will continue down Church Street past Minster Gardens into All Saints’ Square shortly before 9am and on to College Street.

The torch will be carried into Clifton Park, via Doncaster Gate, and follow the path from the main gates past the cenotaph, bandstand and kids’ play area.

It will leave the park on Doncaster Road, near the Middle Lane junction, head towards the Mushroom Roundabout and towards Dalton and Thrybergh.

The junction of Doncaster Road and Chestnut Court, Thrybergh, will be the final viewing spot shortly after 9.30am before it is put back in its vehicle to be taken to Conisbrough.

The Tuesday town centre street market will also take place with its usual amazing range of stalls and goods on offer.

Schools will not only line the route but also take part in a School Sports Festival being hosted at Clifton Park from 10am to 3pm.

Around 1,000 young people are expected to take part in a variety of events to celebrate all manner of sporting activities.
