When the Queen visited Brampton Leisure Centre

“SHE was absolutely brilliant.”

That’s how the former manager of a sports and leisure centre in Wath fondly remembers meeting the Queen in 1986.

Peter Coulton (64), was co-manager at Brampton Leisure Centre when Her Majesty visited the council-run complex — which had previously been a school building — off Brampton Road.

“I remember the security prior to the event was unreal,” said Mr Coulton, originally from Wickersley but now living in Wath.

Currently working for the probation service, he said he had good memories of the Queen’s visit to the leisure centre.

“She was great,” he said. “She spoke with everyone there and took her time. I remember her having a laugh with the young lad on the exercise bike!
