Warning over mirror fires

PEOPLE are being warned that mirrors can cause fires at this time of year after a blaze over the weekend.

Firefighters were called to a house in Ravenfield on yesterday afternoon after a mirror on a bedroom window ledge focussed the sun’s rays and ignited a carpet.

The incident happened on Common Lane at 1.30pm and it is believed that the fire was not discovered straight away.

Fire officers took around 90 minutes to put out the fire.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Fire Service warned people to keep mirrors away from windows now that the sun is at a low angle in the sky as they can cause fires by acting like a lens and focussing the sun’s rays.
