Zero tolerance and extra officers for derby match

SOUTH Yorkshire Police is urging football fans at tomorrow’s match between Rotherham United and Sheffield Wednesday FC to enjoy the game safely.

Police said a number of extra officers will be on duty for the match at the New York Stadium to ensure disruption was kept to a minimum for businesses, residents and shoppers.

Chief inspector Richard Butterworth, who is overseeing the policing of the match, said: “We are planning for a safe, enjoyable event for everyone attending and we are expecting a great atmosphere.

“I will ensure we provide a welcoming environment for fans who want to attend and enjoy the game and endeavour that there is as little disruption as possible for people conducting their daily business in the town centre.

“However, we will not tolerate any level of disorder or violence within South Yorkshire and we have sufficient resources in place to deal with those intent on causing trouble.”

The game is expected to attract a sell out crowd and there will be a visible policing presence around the ground and in the town centre.

Barriers will also be in place around the stadium.

Rotherham United stadium manager, Paul Davis, added: “We urge all supporters to get to the ground as early as possible to avoid any last minute queues at the turnstiles.

“There are roadworks in operation on Centenary Way and so we urge all supporters to set off in good time."
