Youngster in canal tragedy

AN eight-year-old boy who died the day after falling into a canal at Swinton on Monday has been named by police.

AN eight-year-old boy died the day after falling into a canal at Swinton.

Emergency services were called to the canal off Talbot Street at around 5.10pm on Monday after a report that a Matthew Cartwright, of  Windhill Terrace, Mexborough, had fallen into the water.

The youngster, who has not been named, was with a relative at the time of the incident and was flown to Rotherham General Hospital by South Yorkshire Police’s helicopter.

He was later transferred to Sheffield Children’s Hospital but died on Tuesday with his family by his side.

A postmortem is being carried out to establish the cause of death.

Officers do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances concerning the incident, which they said appeared to have been a tragic accident.

Doncaster Coroner’s Office said that they were aware of the death but no date had been fixed for the opening of an inquest.
