Young Rotherham artists hoping to make sales

ART students are preparing for an annual show of their work which promises to creative youngsters into ambitious entrepreneurs.

Thomas Rotherham College’s second annual Art Viewing evening takes place on Thursday night and not only gives the A-level students the chance to show off their work, but to sell it as well.

The show, which takes place between 5.30pm and 7.30pm on Thursday, will be opened by Sheffield artist Joe Scarborough and follows a similar exhibition at city law firm Keeble Hawson, in October last year, where one student sold a single piece for £500.

TRC’s head of art Emily Scholey said: “Many people think of art as being a less vocational subject but the viewings give the students an opportunity to sell their work and it really exercises their business sense as well.

“It is also a real boost for many of the students to see people’s reactions to their work.”

Anyone is welcome to attend the free event and view the work of more than 100 pupils at the college, off Moorgate Road, Rotherham.

Art lovers are also being offered the opportunity to attend a free art exhibition at Wentworth Church between May 30 and 31.

Refreshments will be served at the village school.

The event, open between 2pm and 6pm on the Sunday and 10am and 6pm on the Monday features art created by a number of local artists.
