Yorkshire web users back 'digital ballot'

A digitised ballot was favoured by 48 per cent, up 30 per cent since the last last Parliamentary election in 2005.

But voters were still keen to hear from candidates through local papers and leaflets, rather than social networking websites like Twitter.

Less than a fifth of voters felt their MPs should be more active on the internet, the poll for Virgin Media found.

David Armstrong, the company’s regional head of business markets, said: “Technology looks like it could be critical in helping to ignite more interest from the public.

“The absence of an e-voting system is ironic when you think how many people will schedule a visit to the polling station in their digital calendars, and check their emails, texts and Facebook while they’re queuing to vote.”
