Vandals have wrecked pensioner Peter Scales' "pride and joy" after their late-night rampage left it a total write-off.

While Peter and his wife Patricia slept just yards away, the yobs left his treasured Peugeot Executive a wreck by causing thousands of pounds of damage, including:

  • Kicking dents in every panel of the bodywork, including four down one side of the car.

  • Knocking off both wing mirrors.

  • Smashing a hole in the windscreen.

  • Causing more dents by dancing on the roof.

Now Peter, who used the car to drive disabled Patricia about, has been forced to launch a hunt for new transport to stop her becoming housebound.

"I'm gutted," he said. "Whoever has done this are just animals.

"The car was my pride and joy—it was in great nick and I really looked after it.

"I was still paying for it, too, but now it's useless.

"The insurers have said with the damage done it will be a write-off."

Peter, of Bradgate Lane, Kimberworth, said that there had been problems with vandalism in the area earlier this year, but admitted that the scale of the attack on his beloved dark blue Peugeot had left him stunned.

"The level of damage has gone beyond a joke," he said. "All my mirrors are hanging down like a spaniel's ears and the front window is really badly damaged on the driver's side."

A neighbour of the couple reported seeing youths attacking the car at about 1.30am on Wednesday and police are now investigating the vandalism.

There are looking for two suspects, both described as white males who were wearing dark clothing and ski masks or balaclavas.
