A NUISANCE council tenant was evicted this week following complaints of aggressive behaviour and use of foul and abusive language.

The man, who has not been named, had been a resident of the town's Wharncliffe Flats complex for 25 years but evicted by a Rotherham County Court bailiff after a 'catalogue of complaints' about both the behaviour and demeanour of the resident and several of the visitors that would frequent the flat.

Cllr Jahangir Akhtar, Rotherham Borough Council’s Cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said that the eviction, which was part of the council's on-going campaign against anti-social behaviour, showed that the authority would not tolerate nuisance tenants or residents.

He added: "Where we can, we do try to help our tenants if they have particular issues and this was done in this case.

“But we can only do so much and if any tenant continues to disturb their neighbours with unacceptable behaviour such as this, we will have no hesitation in taking court action to evict them.

“It is only right and fair that our residents can expect to lead good lives without the constant disruption and worry being caused by bad neighbours."

The decision to evict the man was supported by anti-social behaviour officers, as he had already been the subject of an Anti-Social Behaviour Order (ASBO) and an Anti-Social Behaviour Injunction, as well as being offered help and support.

The orders were regularly breached, with neighbours regularly complaining about him, and his visitors for their aggressive behaviour particularly towards the more vulnerable residents.

Steve Parry, the council’s anti-social behaviour co-ordinator, added: "This is another example of the positive action we are taking in Rotherham to tackle anti-social behaviour. "
