Working housing benefit claimants double

THE number of working people applying for housing benefit in Rotherham has more than doubled in five years.

In May 2010, there were 22,000 claims, of which 1,727 were in work. But by last August, the total had risen 11 per cent while the proportion in work had jumped to 3,631.

Commenting on the research by Labour, Rotherham MP Sarah Champion said: “David Cameron’s Tory-led Government has presided over the steepest fall in living standards since the days of Charles Dickens.

“These figures show that once again the people of Rotherham are paying the price for his economic failure.”
