Workers in £100,000 raids on Morrisons warehouse

The thieves took alcohol, televisions and other stock from the Morrisons storage facility where they worked, with £18,000-worth of goods found at one man’s home.

Martin Heyworth (26) of Barnsley Road, Wombwell, was sentenced to three years and four months in prison at Sheffield Crown Court on Tuesday.

David Chatterton (30) of Wath Road, Wombwell, received two years, as did colleague Michael Doherty (56) of Commonwealth View, Bolton on Dearne.

All three men pleaded guilty to the thefts, committed between November 2009 and August 2011.

A fourth man, William Claypole (56), of Littlefield Lane, in Wombwell, was ordered to carry out 100 hours of community service for handling a television taken from the warehouse.

Det Sgt John Yoxall of South Yorkshire Police said: “At a time when families shopping expenses are stretched, these men were stealing thousands of pounds worth of items from a supermarket.

“This is a cost which inevitably will be passed on to the consumer in one way or another.   

“The greed of those involved is staggering and it was this greed that led to them being caught. They all abused the trust given to them by their employer.”
