The event in Rotherham has been organised by borough councillor Emma Hoddinott and is being supported by women’s groups.

Although Friday’s walk is primarily aimed at women, everyone is welcome to join in, particularly young people and children.

Reclaim the Night aims to unite people to stand against rape and all forms of male violence against women.

The marches are normally held across the world to coincide with the UN Day to End Violence Against Women.

Cllr Hoddinott said: “This is the fourth walk we have done to raise awareness of women’s issues in the town, particularly around safety in the town centre.

“The theme this year is around Rotherham women past, present and future and the walk will reflect the history of women.

“Rotherham College is doing a bit about women and the war 100 years ago and around Suffrage.

“We have the Orgreave Truth and Justice campaign joining us to talk about women during the Miners’ Strike.

“And families of child sexual exploitation survivors will also be with us to share their experiences — it’s an important part of the history of our town and women as well.

“Back at the Town Hall, there will be various speeches about the future around hope and what we want for the town.”

Three banners have also been created to reflect the past, present and future theme.

Attendees should meet at Riverside House where there will be banner making from 5.30pm and the walk will start at 6pm.

“Around 100 women have attended in previous years in all weathers, the weather looks good for this Friday, so we are expecting the same numbers again,” said Cllr Hoddinott.

“Everybody is welcome, it’s a family-friendly event.”

Cllr Hoddinott said the event was important because it allowed people to reflect on issues facing women in Rotherham.

She added: “It gives us a focal point and chance to come together in a safe space to talk about those issues and reflect and also celebrate once-a-year.”

Refreshments will be served at the Town hall, which will be open from 6pm for anyone not joining the walk.

The event is alcohol-free and free parking is available from 6pm in all council car parks and on-street parking bays.
