Woman's body found in canal

A WOMAN’S body was pulled from the canal after a handbag and walking stick were spotted on the bank side by dog walkers.

Police were called to a stretch of the River Don near the Pastures Bride, Doncaster Road, Mexborough, at around noon on Thursday after being alerted by the passers-by who noticed “rags” in the water.

Emergency services attended the scene and following a search, pulled the body of 59-year-old Christine Starr of Ravensfield Street, Denaby, from the water.

A police spokesman confirmed that there were no suspicious circumstances.

He added: “The body of a 59-year-old woman was found in a canal close to Denaby Main on March 22.

“The initial call came in from a member of the public and we dealt with it from there.

“The call was received shortly after noon.”

An inquest into Mrs Starr’s death was opened yesterday.
