The driver of a Mercedes estate car, an elderly man, was left with minor leg injuries but was able to walk away from the incident, which happened between Queensway and Pleasley Road.

“The ambulance crew were severely shaken by what had happened,” said one Rotherham firefighter, who attended the scene.

“Although we cannot comment on how the incident may have occurred it was clear that the elderly woman, who we had to free from a car, was lucky to escape serious injury.

“We had to work fast and prise the roof off the car in order to free her.”
