Woman dies as car careers off M1

A 52-year-old woman has died after her car hit a tree on the M1 motorway near Rotherham.

The crash took place on Sunday near junction 31, close to the turn-off to Swallownest.

According to South Yorkshire Police, the car crossed the hard shoulder and slid down the embankment before hitting a tree and ending up on its roof.

Police said the driver, from Hartlepool, sustained fatal head and chest injuries.

A 40-year-old Scottish man, who was a passenger in the car, sustained minor cuts and bruises that required treatment at the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield.
