Witnesses plea after couple attacked

A COUPLE were verbally abused before being punched and knocked to the ground in an unprovoked attack.

Officers have issued an appeal for witnesses after the 23-year-old man and 18-year-old woman were attacked by a man near to the bus stops in Montgomery Square, Wath.

A spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Police said that the couple, from Mexborough, were approached by the man at around 8.20pm on April 2.

She said: “This man allegedly verbally abused the victims before carrying out what appears to be an unprovoked assault, punching the man several times and pushing the woman to the ground.”

Both victims sustained minor cuts and bruising as a result of the assault.

The spokeswoman added: “The unknown offender was then seen jumping onto an X220 bus heading to Barnsley.

“He is described as a white male in his early 20s, about 5ft 9in tall, and of slim build with short, dark hair.”

The couple’s attacker was wearing blue jeans, a light coloured zip-up hoodie and a light coloured beanie style hat at the time of the incident.

Police now want to speak to anyone who saw the incident in Montgomery Square, or any passengers riding the X220 bus, which the offender was seen boarding after the assault.
