Why Rotherham United didn't offer Will Grigg a permanent deal

The 31-year-old spent last season’s League One campaign on loan with the Millers although he missed out on the promotion run-in after requiring hamstring surgery.

Manager Paul Warne had intimated he would try to turn Grigg’s stay into a permanent one once the player was fit again.

However, there was a change of plan and the centre-forward has now joined MK Dons following his release by parent club Sunderland.

“For us to sign any player, everybody in the group has to agree,” Warne said. “Not everyone agreed so it didn’t happen. We never got as far as offering Will a deal.

“I don’t have full autonomy on signings. It’s a democratic approach that we have at this club. There are a lot of people involved in the decision, not just my immediate staff.”

Grigg scored six times in 28 appearances for Rotherham and was an effective foil for attacking partner Michael Smith.
