Wath pensioner acquitted of sexually abusing teenager following trial

A FORMER sailor who was accused of sexually abusing a teenager in the 1970s has been acquitted by a jury.

Barrie Jackson (80), of Sandygate, Wath, has been on trial at Sheffield Crown Court since Monday accused of four counts of indecent assault against a girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons.

A jury returned not guilty verdicts on all counts today (Thursday) after deliberating for eight hours and 34 minutes following the three-day trial.

Mr Jackson told jurors he was in the Navy in the 1950s and 1960s, serving on ships such as HMS Victory and HMS Scorpion.

After leaving the Navy he said he had worked on the telephone lines for the General Post Office.
