The multi-million pound Robert Dyson House, at Wath, is the centralised base for most of South Yorkshire Police’s training—as well as major incident investigators.

It has 20 classrooms, a learning unit, gym and conference facilities and replaces the previous training unit at Sheffield, which flooded in 2007.

The cutting-edge complex was paid for by capital funds and the sale of assets, and snapped up for a “fraction” of its original cost because of low property prices.

Chief constable Med Hughes said: “There’s a real buzz about the place already. It’s a dual purpose building and as we move to find more cost effective ways of delivering policing in the future this will become a hub, not just for South Yorkshire but for our colleagues in West Yorkshire, Humberside and hopefully North Yorkshire as well.”
