Warning over stolen drugs

POLICE have issued a warning after a large number of drugs were stolen in a raid on a chemists.

“DON’T buy drugs that are not prescribed to you.”

That is the message from the police following a burglary at a chemists in which a large quantity of tablets were stolen.

The burglary occurred happened at Akram Chemist on Wombwell High Street between 1pm last Saturday and 8.45am on Monday.

Police believe burglars broke in through the roof and stole 650 tablets of diazepam, 300 tablets of nitrazepam, and 600 tablets of Zopiclone with an estimated street value of between £700 to £800.

Det Con Mark Walker said: “People need to be aware of the dangers of taking tablets that aren't prescribed to them and if they are approached by anyone trying to sell prescription tablets around the Wombwell area, they should call us.”

All of these tablets can have dangerous effects including:

qIndividuals becoming dependent on the tablets especially those who have a past history of substance misuse.

  • Overdosing if large quantities are consumed.
  • Respiratory problems when mixed with alcohol.
  • Liver problems.

A spokesman for NHS Barnsley’s Substance Misuse Team said: “Taking any prescription drugs that are not prescribed is unsafe and can have detrimental effects on your short-term and long-term health.”
