Warning over Rotherham council tax reduction offer

Cold callers from Huddersfield-based Council Tax Banding Consultants have been phoning people in Rotherham and offering to fight to get their council tax reduced in return for an up-front payment of £145.

But Rotherham Council says the council tax appeals process is "easy and free" and a spokesman advised anyone approached by the company not to pay any money.

“By going to our website and searching for ‘Council Tax,’ you can easily browse all the information regarding your Council Tax band and view all your options.

“Alternatively, you can also call the Council Tax department on 01709 336006 and discuss your options." she said.

But a spokesman for the CTB said it was a legitimate company and the intial £145 fee was to fund investigations into possible council tax savings.

She said: “We do call potential customers to offer our services but we do also post leaflets and prefer our customers to contact us.”
