Warning after fake cops scam elderly couple out of £8k

POLICE have released a CCTV image of a man they would like to speak to after fraudsters conned an elderly pair out of thousands of pounds.

The conmen, who claimed to be police officers from forces across the country, contacted a woman (62) and a man (82) by telephone on June 3, a police spokesperson said.

The fake cops asked the elderly pair to withdraw money to help them check if the notes were counterfeit.

A fraudster then attended the victims' home in Todwick posing as a courier and coerced them into handing over more than £8,000, said the spokesperson.

The victims realised they had been scammed and reported it to the police on June 8.

If anyone recognises the man in the CCTV image they should call police on 101, quoting incident number 361 of June 8.

Alternatively, you can stay completely anonymous by contacting the independent charity Crimestoppers via their website Crimestoppers-uk.org or by calling their UK Contact Centre on 0800 555 111.

The spokesperson said police would never ask members of the public for their PIN number, to transfer money or send anyone to collect your bank card from your address.

If you are concerned that you, or a loved one, has been the victim of this kind of scam, please report it to the olice on 101, at www.southyorks.police.uk, or to Action Fraud online at www.actionfraud.police.uk or by calling 0300 123 2040.
