On Armed Forces Day the Rotherham veteran met fellow ex-serviceman Sgt Simon Kirkham, of the Rotherham Central Neighbourhood Policing team.

After hearing John’s tales of wartime derring-do, former serviceman Sgt Kirkham contacted some friends with a 1942 Tiger Moth biplane, who got John up in the air again.

Sgt Kirkham said: “What a character John is —  it was an honour to be able to sort out this little adventure for him.

“John defended this country during the war to allow people to live freely and this is just a small way to show him how much we appreciate what he did.”
