South Yorkshire Police were pleased with the response of the vast majority, who heeded the Government’s advice.

There were 24 fixed penalty notices issued across the force area from Good Friday to Easter Sunday, mostly for non-essential travel.

But Supt Paul McCurry said the long weekend of patrols was met with largely desolate streets, parks and roads.

He added: “The bank holiday has been a very different bank holiday.

“Normally we spend time with family and friends. But I know for many of you this has been a different experience.

“It’s certainly been difficult and different for all of our officers and staff who have continued to come to work and protect the public of South Yorkshire.

“I want to say a big thank you to all of you for staying at home this weekend.”

He added: “We are all starting to know people who have been suffering from Covid-19. Of course, by staying at home, you are helping to save the lives of your family and friends.”

Two men were fined on Saturday after being stopped while driving from Sheffield to Nottingham to pick up a friend.

Two others were caught speeding as they travelled to Doncaster from Durham — also on the way to see friends.

Supt McCurry said: “Sadly, on a couple of occasions we have had to move to enforcement but of course that’s always the last thing that we want to do.”
