VE Day saw more calls to police than New Year's Day

VE DAY was the busiest day of the year so far for South Yorkshire Police’s call centre — topping New Year’s Day.

The Friday bank holiday of May 8 saw 2,903 calls made to Atlas Court, more than 250 over the total for January 1.

Supt Becs Horsfall, head of force communications, said: “The warm weather we all enjoyed in May is likely to have played a part in the huge number of calls we received on VE Day.

“I know my call handlers will always do their best to help, but there are some calls we just shouldn’t be dealing with.

“Please think before you call and check there aren’t other organisations that are better placed to help you.

“On the face of it, a call from someone complaining about a broken bread bin they ordered online may seem amusing, but waiting in the queue behind that person is likely to be someone who genuinely needs our help or support.”
