Vandalism means no trains calling at Rotherham Central railway station
Engineers were on site carrying out repairs amid severe disruption to services for passengers on the morning commute.
A Northern Rail spokesperson said: “Due to a theft of the signalling equipment in the Rotherham area, trains between Meadowhall and Swinton in both directions are being diverted and are unable to call at Rotherham Central until further notice.
“Network Rail staff are on site carrying out repair work.”

Some services may run non-stop between Meadowhall and Swinton, the firm added.
