Officers were called to the terraced house on Spalton Road, Parkgate, at around 7pm on Monday and remained in place for two hours.

More than 40,000 people watched a video of the incident, which was streamed live on Facebook by a neighbour.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said a 42-year-old woman had suffered hand injuries after being held “against her will”.

During the stand-off, the video showed officers sealing off the road and armed officers surround the property.

One officer could be heard telling a man in the property: “Come to the door. Don’t bring anything with you in your hands and you will come to no harm.

“Your house is completely surrounded by police officers.

“We are armed police officers and we will respond to whatever you do so don’t do anything silly — do you understand?

“If you make any attempt to endanger life we will shoot to stop you.”

Officers could also be heard telling neighbours to stay in their homes and the footage showed a woman being led from the property by police, before a man was also led away and taken to a waiting police car.

A police spokeswoman said the woman had left the property at around 8.30pm and a 42-year-old man had been arrested at around 9pm on suspicion of assault and false imprisonment.
