Unemployment up in Rotherham - but youth jobless figure falls

THE number of people out of work in the Rotherham district has gone up — but the number of young people jobless has fallen.

The latest government figures have revealed that the number of people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance and Universal Credit in Rotherham – which includes Maltby, Dinnington and Mexborough – rose by 60 or one per cent to 4,445 for February compared to a year ago.

Among people aged 18 to 24, there were 915 people on Jobseeker’s Allowance and Universal Credit, a fall of 130 or 12 per cent on this time last year.

Dave Horner, employer relationship manager for Doncaster, said that Rotherham Jobcentre was holding an invitation-only jobs fair today (March 23).

He said that 30 employers and 10 training providers were due to attend, with 1,500 vacancies on the day.

Mr Horner said that if jobseekers wanted to go to the event they should ask their work coaches for an appointment.

There are set to be between 1,500 and 2,000 temporary jobs with Pearson Edexcel in Maltby processing exam papers.

Stagecoach Buses in Rotherham is recruiting, as is G4S which has security roles.

Dutton International Agency and Portland Training are running a course to gain a CSCS card which could lead to securing one of 40 jobs on offer with Rotherham Borough Council for gardening, waste management and street cleansing.

Secretary of state for work and pensions Esther McVey said: “Getting a job means securing an income for a family and the chance to build a better future. That’s why up and down the country we are doing all we can to help people into work.

“And from next month, we’ll be taking thousands more people out of paying tax and also increasing the National Living Wage, benefiting those on the lowest pay and making sure they keep more of what they earn.

“In fact by raising the National Living Wage we have ensured that the lowest earners have seen their wages grow by almost seven per cent above inflation since 2015.”
