The savings will mean the funding gap has grown to more than £200 million since 2010.

The Government has announced that the way councils are funded will change in 2020 — but has not yet given details.

Council leader Cllr Chris Read said: “Each year, the Government grant funding we have to spend on services gets less and less, while the demand for services to the most vulnerable families and residents continues to rise.

“Over the coming weeks and months, we will be setting out how we bridge that gap, while continuing to seek certainty from the Government about how they intend to see local services funded in the future.

“Over the last few years, we have done everything we can to prioritise the services people have told us they value, while at the same time making sure we meet our legal obligations and protecting children and vulnerable adults, and we will continue to do this.”

Public consultation on the specific proposals will take place from October 26 to November 30.
