Two men sentenced to jail for 60 cannabis plants

TWO MEN found to be growing cannabis in Rotherham have been sentenced to time in prison.

Twenty-five-year-old Mirjan Petku (left), and twenty-two-year-old Rexhep Petku (right), both of no fixed address, both appeared before Sheffield Crown Court for sentencing after being found guilty of producing a controlled drug of Class B.

As part of the crackdown on cannabis cultivation in Rotherham, officers executed a warrant on March 23 this year at a property on Woodhouse Green, Thurcroft.

Officers found two rooms in the property that were being used for cannabis cultivation, and more than 60 plants.

The plants were at the mature stage of growth, and a further nursery of seedlings was located.

Each room had equipment including transformers, fans, and lighting used in cannabis cultivation.

Sgt Matt Smith said: “We are continuing to gather intelligence and execute warrants at pace as the crackdown on cannabis cultivations and the associated crimes continues in Rotherham.

“Cannabis cultivation has associated crimes such as modern slavery and the exploitation of vulnerable people, and the money from cannabis is used to fund organised crime in our communities.

“We are stronger when working with our communities and continue to ask for your intelligence to help us identify properties that may be being used for drug production."
