Two held in lead thefts probe

TWO men have been arrested in connection with lead thefts after police shifted the timing of their regular patrols to tackle the problem.

Two police community support officers and a police constable from the Mexborough Safer Neighbourhood Team turned their day shifts into night shifts after a recent spate of metal thefts under the cover of darkness.

The move resulted in the two arrests, which were made after the officers noticed a rear gate to a shop open on Bank Street, during the early hours of July 22.

A police spokesman confirmed: “On investigating, they discovered two men on the shop roof, believed to be stealing lead.

“The two men, aged 22 and 16, were arrested and approximately £200 of lead was recovered nearby.”

Pc Phil Black from Mexborough SNT added: “The SNT will proactively patrol areas and provide a high visibility police presence, to catch the people who are involved in criminal activity, and to reassure members of the public that action is being taken to tackle any issues or concerns.”
