Another 16-year-old girl was still in hospital this morning.

Police said that the two men arrested had been bailed pending further inquiries.

A police spokesman said: “A silver Fiat Punto was travelling on Adwick Road out of Mexborough towards Adwick-upon-Dearne when it was successfully overtaken by a Vauxhall Astra.

“A silver Vauxhall Corsa has also tried overtaking the silver Punto but before it could complete the overtaking manoeuvre, the Corsa has collided head-on with a VW Golf travelling in the opposite direction towards Mexborough.”

The driver of the VW Golf, an elderly man, sustained minor injuries.

Anyone with information about the collision is urged to call the South Yorkshire Police witness help line on 0114 220 2970.
