For the fourth year running, Rotherham Children and Young People's Services and Rother FM are launching an appeal to provide Christmas food hampers and toys for less privileged children and families.

With the help of organisations like Rotherham Lions, Magna, RotherFed and Parkgate Shopping, and the generosity of people living or working in Rotherham, it is hoped to surpass last year's delivery of food and toys to over 2,000 needy children and families which also helped organisations such as Rotherham Sure Start and Bluebell Wood Hospice.

Various events are taking place including:

A fund raising pub quiz night hosted by Rother FM with a first prize of a Christmas Party table for 10 people, courtesy of Magna at their 'Eat, Bump and Groove' event.

The event takes place at Silverwood Miners Welfare on Thursday and includes a disco and pie and pea supper, charity auction and raffle.  For further details and tickets contact Rother FM on 01709 369991, between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday.

During the first week in December, people are being asked to bring tins of food into work or make cash donations which will be turned into Christmas hampers ready for Christmas delivery. For further details and donations contact Ann Levick on 01709 336365.

Councillor Shaun Wright, Cabinet member for children and young people's services said: "This is a great appeal and really does have a direct benefit for those families whose children might miss out on the joy that Christmas brings.

"The support from different organisations across the borough is very welcome and without them we couldn't run such a successful appeal."

In addition, Rother FM will be acting as a collection point and people can drop off their toys and tins there throughout December.

“Parkgate Shopping are also involved through their Parkgate Giving Trees–where anyone can go along, collect a gift tag and buy a suitable present for the age group and gender of child specified on the tag.
