“Time at the bar” called as Catcliffe pub is earmarked for flats

CATCLIFFE’S boarded-up Red Lion looks set to follow neighbouring pub the Plough in becoming apartments, to the dismay of villagers.

The building was closed in March because of falling trade but could now be converted into ten single-bedroom flats.

Darren Hatfield (42), of Sheffield Lane, had been a customer since he was 18.

He said: “I think it’s an absolute disgrace that my local is now being turned into flats. 

“This pub was my place to go and relax after work and socialise with friends. You will ruin the entire community spirit.

“Give the pub to a new landlord or landlady because this pub has a place in many people’s hearts within Catcliffe.”

Liz Cooper, of Blue Man’s Way, added: “The pub is an important part of village life and should be supported.

“It is an entirely inappropriate site for flats, the main issue being with parking and access on a very limited site.”

Applicant Neville Brown’s plans said: “The demise of village pubs across the borough has led to a number of conversions and redevelopments.

“The last ten years has seen a significant shift in pub drinking culture, with many people choosing to go to town centre establishments or family friendly restaurants where they can dine. 

“While working men’s clubs remain popular among a particular generation, traditional high street pubs such as the Red Lion no longer serve a viable community asset.

“The Plough was granted permission in 2012 to form five flats. 

This scheme sets an important precedent in how the council views sustainable development.”

The plan, including a cycle store and one disabled vehicle space, will be decided by RMBC’s planning board.

Catcliffe Parish Council’s objection said: “The impact on parking availability would be severely affected. 

“The B6066 and part of Station Road which surround the proposed development have double yellow lines, which would mean residents have to park outside neighbouring properties.”
