Three more arrests in Rotherham child sex abuse probe

TWO women and a man have been arrested in connection with historic child sex offences — bringing the total detained under Operation Clover to 16.

Police said today that the two Rotherham women, aged 58 and 40, had been arrested on suspicion of causing prostitution of a woman, false imprisonment, and aiding, abetting and procuring rape.

Both have been released on bail while the investigation continues.

A 52-year-old man, also from Rotherham, was also in police custody today after being arrested on suspicion of rape, indecent assault, and procuring a female for prostitution.

Operation Clover is a joint investigation by South Yorkshire Police in partnership with Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council and the Crown Prosecution Service.

Three of the 16 people arrested have been charged with a total of 78 offences.

They include Sajid Bostan, of Vernon Road, Rotherham, who faces 11 child sex abuse charges, including unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of 13.

It is alleged the offences occurred between 1990 and 2001.

Bostan was been bailed to appear before Rotherham Magistrates’ Court on tomorrow.

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Insp Martin Tate, said: “This is a complex and protracted investigation with a vast amount of work still to do.

“I want to continue to encourage victims of all sexual crime to come forward - it takes huge courage and I would want to reassure anyone who does come forward that their complaints will be taken seriously and thoroughly investigated.”
