Staff from Rotherham, Maltby and Parkway stations were called to Hollowgate — just off Wellgate — at 2.52pm on Friday.

They found smoke billowing from the house after a fire broke out in the roof, destroying the structure.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus went into the building to confirm that there was no-one inside, said a South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue spokesman.

Colleagues then used an aerial ladder platform to fight the fire from above.

The fire was out by 5.30pm and was recorded as accidental, he added, and the National Grid attended to make sure the electricity supply was isolated.
