LOWLIFE thieves could have robbed a group of vulnerable and disabled old folk of their Christmas joy.

They broke into their sheltered housing complex and stole the cash which the pensioners had been saving for their Christmas party.

This week a 61-year-old woman who lives at the Sanctuary sheltered complex in Church View, Edlington said: “These are lowlife who should be taken off the streets.”

The woman, who asked not to be named, added: “Some of the people who live here are lonely and without family, and the party would have been the highlight of their Christmas. It means a lot to them.

“We do not want to cancel, but now we may be forced to do just that.”

Most of the 45 old folk, aged between 60 and 92 who live at the complex, had each tipped up £3.50 to pay for the party on December 9.

But in the third break-in at the centre within a year, the Christmas cash, about £40 in all, was taken along with £100 from the pensioners’ breakfast club kitty.

The resident added: “The amounts stolen might not seem much, but they mean a lot to people who have very little.

“The breakfast club which provides a cooked breakfast for £2.50 once a week is very popular and gives residents the chance to get out and meet other people.

“Now that too is at risk after the thieves struck.”

Now the old folk are appealing for help to save their Christmas dinner.

Anyone prepared to make a donation is asked to contact the warden at the centre on 01709 770922
