The BMW passed the junction with Poplar Drive, heading towards Brinsworth Road, and then collided with Ryan, a police spokeswoman said.

A black Seat Ibiza, also travelling along Brinsworth Lane, then struck him as he lay in the road.

Mitchell Hughes (24), of Lapwater Road, Wingfield, appeared at Sheffield Magistrates' Court yesterday (Monday) charged with causing a serious injury through dangerous driving and failing to stop after a road traffic collision in connection with the incident.

"Ryan was taken by ambulance to Sheffield Children's Hospital where he remains in a critical condition," added the spokeswoman.

Brinsworth Whitehill Junior Football Club, where Ryan previously played for the under-15 side, tweeted a message of support to the schoolboy.

The club said: "After the terrible incident on Friday in Brinsworth we'd like to take this time to wish Ryan a speedy recovery.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with all his family, friends and team mates @ Phoenix u15s, a past member of our current 15s and school friend to many still."

He enterd no pleas to the charges on Monday and was remanded in custody to appear at Sheffield Crown Court on May 20.

"The driver of the Seat Ibiza, a 17-year-old man from Brinsworth, was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and later released under investigation," she added.
