A 13-YEAR- OLD girl caught a burglar in the act when she arrived home from school.

The youngster was able to alert her dad when she found Kay Nixon stealing jewellery at the family home in Godric Drive, Brinsworth.

And the panicking intruder was nabbed as she tried to escape over a neighbour’s garden.

She was jailed for two years and five months at Sheffield Crown Court after admitting three burglaries.

Pc Alex Dorlin said: “To enter a house and take items not belonging to them is bad enough, but for the daughter to come home from school and find the offender in her house is just not right.

“A custodial sentence can provide reassurance to the community that we will catch and punish offenders.

Kay Nixon was intent on gaining entry and stealing, however it is important for residents to remember to keep their homes secure at all times.

“Doors should be locked even when they are home or in the garden and keys, mobile phones, laptops and handbags should be kept out of sight.”
