Taking to the streets for the Foodbank

A LIFESTYLE support service is among supporters taking to the streets for a 5km walk in aid of Rotherham Foodbank.

Walk Against Hunger is a national event aimed at raising money and the profile of foodbanks under the Trussell Trust umbrella.

And a team from Get Healthy Rotherham (GHR) will take part in the Rotherham walk, setting off from Grove Road at 11am on Saturday and returning via Moorgate, Boston Castle Park, Canklow Woods and Alma Road.

Rotherham Foodbank is run by Hope Church from its Grove Road base. Associate pastor Steve Prosser said: “For several years Rotherham Foodbank has been providing immediate support for local people in crisis through our emergency food supplies and support.

“Unfortunately, in recent times the demand has increased. Fortunately we have been able to meet this demand thanks to the generosity of our inspirational volunteers and local community, who continue to support us via their time and also through their donations.

“We are also fortunate enough to be able to work in partnership with other local organisations, which has really enabled us to help with any other issues or longer-term problems people may be experiencing.”

The GHR team — commissioned by Rotherham Council and offering free support — linked with the foodbank three years ago provide help in addition to the food packages being collected.

“Working with Get Healthy Rotherham has helped our service users make positive changes to live healthier lifestyles and help improve their circumstances,” said Steve.

“It’s fantastic that they, along with many other of our supporters, are taking part in the Walk Against Hunger.”

GHR will have an advice stall at the foodbank on Saturday, along with a donation point, raffle and tombola, face-painting, book sale, crafts and refreshments.

Service manager Jacqui Reddick said: “We are proud to be supporting and working with Rotherham Foodbank, which is such a vital service for our local community.

“We know that many people can reach crisis at some point in their lives and we hope to help ease this pressure in some way by providing free healthy lifestyle support.

“We also know that in this day and age there shouldn’t be a need for foodbanks, and the Walk Against Hunger is a step towards eventually reaching that goal.

“We are looking forward to taking part in the walk and are grateful to everyone who has sponsored us to help support this excellent cause.”
