Swinton honours VC hero Thomas Jackson

FIRST World War hero Thomas Jackson was the toast of his home village as Swinton paid a double tribute to its fallen son.

St Margaret’s Parish Church hosted a concert of brass band music and choral singing on Wednesday, September 26, to launch the #swintonvc100 commemorations, before veterans and villagers joined a parade and service of reflection and thanksgiving the following day.

The Mayor and Mayoress of Rotherham, Cllr Alan and Mrs Buckley, were among those attending the service, which was led by the Bishop of Sheffield and followed by a wreath-laying ceremony.

Royal British Legion members, Coldstream Guard representatives, First World War re-enactors, school children and residents also joined the parade.

Readings were given during the service by students from Swinton Academy, while Hope Staniforth, a relative of a former soldier, read out the names of the fallen.

Wednesday’s concert featured the South Yorkshire Police Band, Thurnscoe Harmonic Male Voice Choir, Swinton Queen Primary School Choir and soloist Anna Corrine.

The family of L/Cpl Jackson was awarded the Victoria Cross for his gallantry in northern France on September 27, 1918 — just weeks before the end of the First World War.
