Suspected shoplifter 'threatened to infect police with coronavirus'

A SUSPECTED shoplifter has appeared at court accused of assaulting two police officers by coughing and threatening to infect them with coronavirus.

Callum Pressley (26), of Roughwood Road, Kimberworth Park, appeared at Sheffield Magistrates' Court on Friday charged with one count of theft and two counts of assaulting an emergency worker.

Pressley is accused of stealing Bold Gels worth £8.97 from B&M Effingham Street shortly after 4pm on Thursday and assaulting PCs Nicola Dewhurst and Oliver Stirling.

"It is reported that during the police response, two officers were coughed on and told they would get coronavirus," said a police spokeswoman.

"The officers were unharmed".

Pressley denied the charges and was remanded into custody to next appear before the same court on Friday.
