Students keen to get filthy at Bluebell Wood's Mud Madness

A GROUP of students are looking forward to getting filthy to support Bluebell Wood — and fund an expedition to Africa.

Sixteen youngsters from Winterhill School will travel to Tanzania to learn about life and beginning a project to boost educational facilities there.

The students have needed to raise money for the July trip — including race nights, fashion shows and bag packs.

Next up is Bluebell Wood’s Mud Madness event this Saturday, March 30, when their sponsorship cash will be split between the children’s hospice and the trip.

Teacher Mike Torr, Year 9 behaviour for learning leader at the Kimberworth school, said: “The students have worked extremely well together over the past year and have united to make a fabulous team.

“The team were looking at ways to further strengthen their relationships while having fun and the mud run is the ideal opportunity to do this while raising money for a good cause.

“The students were all keen to get involved in supporting others but it’s also an excuse to get filthy whilst racing through mud and tackling obstacles.”

He added: “In Tanzania, students will be participating in community life, exchanging cultural differences and supporting a local project to help improve educational facilities.

“They will also assist with tree planting through the Kilimanjaro tree planting project to help tackle the problem of deforestation.”

Mud Madness — at the Hesley Wood scout centre, Chapeltown — includes 3km and 5.5km routes over dozens of obstacles.

The shorter route will be suitable for anyone over 11, while the longer one is for participants aged 17 or over.

Ruth Wallbank, Bluebell Wood events fundraiser, said: “We’re really inspired by the students at Winterhill who will be tackling Mud Madness to raise funds to help local children and families make magical memories together.

“There’s still time to sign up and take on this very muddy challenge with friends, family members, or co-workers.

“If you decide to sign up, we’d love it if you joined Winterhill School and chose to raise sponsorship for your local children’s hospice too.

“Every pound you raise makes a real difference to families going through the toughest times imaginable.”
