Street memorial to ex-Mayor Michael

A STREET on an estate of 24 new homes has been named in memory of a former mayor of Rotherham.

The housing scheme at Swinton includes six bungalows specially adapted for the disabled and elderly.

The newest street was named Eagleton Gardens in honour of the late Cllr Michael Eagleton, who came to England from Ireland to work in the coal industry.

Cllr Eagleton served on Swinton Urban District Council and Rotherham Borough Council for 22 years between 1978 and 2000.

Ward member Cllr Ken Wyatt said: “Knowing Mick as I did, I’m sure he would have been as delighted as I am to see these fine new bungalows meeting the housing requirements of local residents with special needs.

“In addition, we also have a number of general purpose houses for rent at Cliffe Bank and some shared ownership properties as another housing option at Brookfield Avenue.

“Locally it has been very enjoyable working with the Johnnie Johnson team seeing this major project through to completion.”

The scheme was developed by the Johnnie Johnson Housing Trust in conjunction with Rotherham Borough Council using funding from the Homes and Communities Agency.
