Steelworkers' call for fresh support for under-pressure industry

STEELWORKERS held a public protest calling for more support for their under-pressure industry.

Members of the Community, Unite and GMB unions demonstrated beneath a new billboard on North Drive near the town centre on Tuesday.

It was part of the the WeNeedOurSteel.UK campaign, which is calling on the public to sign a petition supporting UK steel production.

The demands include demanding the country’s infrastructure is built with home-produced steel, the government help to stimulate steel demand, put in place “fair and friction-free” trade agreements and develop an industrial strategy with steel at its heart.

Steel remains a major employer in Rotherham, with Liberty Group running plants at Brinsworth and Aldwarke.

More than 10,000 people have so far signed the petition, which you can see at WeNeedOurSteel.UK.
