Steel firm fined £200,000 after worker's death

A MANUFACTURING firm has been fined £200,000 following the death of a worker.

Alan Gerrard (47), from Rotherham, died when his clothing was caught up in a machine which caused crush injuries in January 2013.

Sheffield Crown Court heard that the agency worker, a father-of-two, was working at McCalls Special Products Limited of Caxton Way in Dinnington when he died.

He had been working there for three weeks.

The company pleaded guilty to breaches of Section 2 and Section 3 of the Health and Safety at Work Act etc 1974 and was fined £200,000 as well as £16,804 in costs.

Inspector Denise Fotheringham, of the Health and Safety Executive, said the machine Mr Gerrard was working on should have been adequately guarded and a risk assessment made by the firm.
