South Yorkshire Police’s Off-Road Bike Intervention Team (ORBIT) also recovered one stolen bike in Rotherham valued at £1,000.

Across the region during 2022, the ORBIT team has taken reports of more than 4,500 off-road incidents across the force and clocked up 3,200 hours patrolling streets, parks, green spaces and farmland.

Alongside assisting officers in searching for vulnerable people, or evidence, the team’s focus is the anti-social use of off-road bikes and vehicles that can cause harm or injury to people, animals and land.

There are dedicated tracks for the use of these vehicles across the UK, and those with permission from a landowner can ride on private land, but across South Yorkshire riders continue to use public pathways, bridleways and farmers’ land.

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police said: “Off-road bike nuisance and related anti-social behaviour is one of the biggest issues for the communities of South Yorkshire and one of the highest reported concerns to the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC).

“Our communities strengthen our work — the intelligence and reports provided enable us to understand where there are problematic areas and those responsible.”
