South Yorkshire Police Commissioner election looms

THE countdown to a new police commissioner is gathering pace this week, with less than 100 days left until public elections.

The Commissioner will assume responsibility for holding the police service to account — taking over from the South Yorkshire Police Authority — a week after a public vote on November 15.

They will also decide how the policing budget is spent and consult the public and victims of crime on community safety.

Their first priority will be to set the council tax precept and approve the Police and Crime Plan for 2013/14.

Currently in the running for the post is the former Mayor of Rotherham, Cllr Shaun Wright, and Gillian Radcliffe, who has worked within the senior management team at forces in South Yorkshire and Lancashire.

The closing date for nominations in South Yorkshire is October 19.
