Socialists gear up for fight against Rotherham spending cuts

ACTIVISTS are preparing to fight spending cuts in Rotherham.

The Rotherham Socialist Party is hosting a public meeting on Thursday to launch its Fight the Cuts campaign.

Speakers include Ralph Dyson, the teachers union rep at Rawmarsh Community School, where NUT members are in their fourth week of strike action against job losses, and a college lecturers union rep at Rotherham College of Arts and Technology where 70 job losses were announced last week.

Socialist Party branch secretary Chris Bingham said: “The Coalition government’s spending cuts are really beginning to bite now. Education and young people are worst affected. EMA being scrapped, sky-high tuition fees, teachers and lecturers losing their jobs - all these cuts are going to badly affect students’ education.

“But as students and the Rawmarsh teachers are showing, we don't have to accept these cuts. Why should we? Ordinary people like teachers and students didn't cause the economic crisis or the budget deficit.

“It was caused by greedy bankers and the financial speculators. Yet the bankers are still getting their billions in bonuses while the government robs kids of £30-a-week EMA. We’re definitely not all in this together.”

“We have organised this meeting to rally support for those already fighting the cuts and to explain that there is an alternative, a socialist policy of taking the economy out of the hands of the fat cats and into public ownership and democratic control for the benefit of the majority.

“Anyone who wants to fight-back against the cuts is welcome to attend.”

The meeting is at 7.30pm tomorrow at The Bridge Inn, Chantrey Bridge.
