Sniffer dogs on trail of drug yobs

SNIFFER dogs have been called in to detect drug users after increased anti-social behaviour and violence was connected to the use of illegal drugs.

The crime-fighting canines have been involved in patrols in Maltby, Wickersley and Rotherham town centre as part of operations assisted by the drug advisors from Rotherham Borough Council and PCSOs.

Chief Inspector Ian Womersley said: “We have seen an increase in antisocial behaviour connected to drugs use in and around Rotherham.

“An effective way to identify those carrying drugs is by use of a passive drugs dog.

“The dog is skilfully trained to find illegal drugs whether it's a large amount or just residue.”

South Yorkshire Police’s sniffer dogs are trained to perform regardless of distractions such as loud music and crowds.

Chief Insp Womersley added: “We have a number of such operations planned over the coming months in many different parts of Rotherham to ensure Rotherham is a safer place to live, work and visit.”

On Friday evening police patrolled recreation grounds in Maltby and Wickersley with the dogs.

Official cautions and drug awareness advice was given to those found in possession.

Pubs in Maltby and Wickersley were visited ahead of searches at the town centre’s pubs and clubs.

A police spokesman said: “Eight people were found to be in possession of illegal drugs, which was well received by licensees and the public and sends a very clear message out that if you use illegal drugs, the police will identify you and deal with you very firmly.”
